DEXA Bone Densitometry
Why is DEXA necessary?
This test (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry - DEXA) calculates the bone loss of the body, with special emphasis on the spine and femur neck thus allowing for accurate estimation of dosage to improve this condition.
DEXA is quick, painless and the preferred method to measure BMD - once osteoporosis is diagnosed, treatment can be initiated and monitored with DEXA.
It is also used as follow up as prognosis of the disease, and follow up in patients with implants and sports injuries
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones get fragile due to lack of Vitamin D, leading to a high risk of bone fractures, Any bone can be affected by osteoporosis, but the most common sites are bones in the hip, spine, wrist, ribs, pelvis and upper arm. Osteoporosis usually has no signs or symptoms until a fracture happens - this is why osteoporosis is often called the 'silent disease'
This condition is today endemic in many parts of the world, including India due to lack of sunlight, incorrect diet, and has been linked to other diseases like thyroid disorders, chronic intestinal ailments, drug-related (steroids), inactivity, excessive alcohol intake and smoking.
